The COVID restrictions are an accelerant. Were there shootings before 2020? Sure, by people of all ages. But now we are seeing the results of the anti-science "mitigations" by governors, mayors, and local school boards. I predict we will see a trend of younger shooters, like the one in HP and the one in Uvalde.
'accelerant' is good word. Crimo is responsible and will be punished accordingly. But the environment where he lived contributed in some form. Thanks for reading and commenting.
It is definitely something that we will be seeing more of unfortunately. And there are so many variables at play. As I heard several say on talk radio today, we are seeing our culture in decay.
Thanks for commentating Katherine. If a young person is disillusioned with life, why do they feel - and act -the impulse to kill strangers? I don't get it but it's an unfortunate reality in our society. Complex issue, not an easy fix.
Except the shooter is 22 years old. He graduated high school before the pandemic began. What a horrible take completely void of any logic or common sense. Pathetic
Thought provoking analysis of this tragedy. Yesterday we were wondering how this young man could have escaped the area given all the people and police at the parade and your point about Highland Park being governed by fear jumps out. Of all the people in the immediate vicinity, not one had the instinctual reaction to run towards the danger in an effort to protect others or at least keep an eye on where he was heading. Perhaps we’ve all been so bombarded by messages of fear, that we’ve diluted the probability that hero’s will rise up during tragedies like this.
This is a great analysis. But I would go 1 step further and say this is a Fear Culture Problem, which results in fewer and fewer healthy outlets for young people as it progresses. Everything about their lives are regulated to the point where their only options are video games and internet exploration. Kids are not out, exploring the physical world anymore. They are indoors playing shooter games, and exchanging ideas with strangers, out of sight from whoever is in charge.
Thanks Reid. Interesting phrase, "Fear Culture Problem." This young man checked out of his surrounding culture years ago. Why? Why did he hate so much to commit mass murder? Zero regard for human life in physical form. A tragedy all around and very preventable as most of them are. Appreciate you reading and commentating.
He threatened to kill everyone and separately threatened suicide in 2019 - do you think he was anticipating Covid shutdowns then? He obviously wasn't effected by the Dist 113 shutdowns in 2020 having already graduated. What a weak ass defamatory commentary you've written.
Why in the world are you blaming covid mandates. What do those bad policies have to do with this young man’s (I.e., the shooter) insanity??? He was apparently seriously mentally ill & acting out in 2019. If you want to ask questions ask how his broken family might have affected him. Ask what pathology & dysfunction went on there. Ask why he wasn’t living with his mother which is most often the case for juveniles after divorce. Ask why his father allowed him to live in an apartment, behind the house where the father & uncle lived, on his own for five years! How uninvolved must his parents have been? Ask why his father, in 2019-2020 provided the young man with the ability to purchase a gun after he reportedly attempted suicide & subsequently threatening to kill others with knives. Ask why his father felt it was time for him to devote his time, attention, & money to running for mayor when his son was having such a difficult time. The shooter didn’t even actually live within Highland Park city limits, but in a small community to the north.
What’s the point of essentially mixing apples & oranges as you have apparently done here? You have provided NO beneficial ideas NOR shown an understanding of possible reasons for the horrific July 4th incident in Highland Park where I once worked. God help us all.
Thanks for commentating and your perspective. Not 'blaming covid mandates.' I'm making an association between the negligent decisions by community leaders and what happened on July 4th. This murderer was disillusioned with his own life, so much so, he took the lives of seven innocent people. Not saying it's a causation but to ignore and not examine the environment around him is irresponsible I think.
We are finding out that this person has mental health issues, but. don't you think that the covid mandates ---- which were awful policies ----could have pushed him (and others) to the utmost extreme? I don't see this write-up as being a case of comparing apples to oranges. It is but one aspect of this picture that cannot be ignored.
We were all treated like prisoners with restrictions that have already been shown to be a huge fail. Not only did those not stop anything, except our economy, but they have devastated the psychological health of millions, even those that were fine before.
People are complex and this guy has had alot going against him. Imo the aspect of the mandates is just one of many.

Most of the people charged with leading us have told us we are dangerous to each other. Draw your own conclusions from that.
