How is everyone’s weekend going? Thanks for spending a part of it with the Six.
It’s a three day holiday weekend, we’re all running around.
Let’s get right to the articles and proceed with the Six.
1. Dems Melt Down After CNN Hosts Criticize Biden Speech.
Thursday night, President Joe Biden made a speech at Freedom Hall in Philadelphia. He rotted out his tired presidential campaign line, “battle for the soul of this nation” and went on the attack against MAGA Republicans. Biden called them, “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic…MAGA Republicans have made their choice. They embrace anger. They thrive on chaos. They live not in the light of truth but in the shadow of lies.” The cable news response fell predictably down party lines with the exception being CNN. A pair of hosts criticized Biden’s strident tone and the Democratic Commentator Industrial Complex had a collective meltdown over the development. NY Post has the juicy details
2. Ohio Bakery Owed $36 Million From Ohio College. Will It Ever See the Money?
For over a century, a bakery in Ohio was a staple of campus life at Oberlin College. The family that ran Gibson’s Bakery would deliver bagels, pizza dough, cookies and other food items all around campus. But in November 2016, literally overnight, everything changed. The bakery was accused of racist actions, protests ensued and the owners of Gibson’s became campus pariahs. They sued the college and won a massive judgement. But will they ever see the money? The Common Sense newsletter publishes this personal essay from one of the owners of Gibson’s explaining just how things went horribly wrong.
3. The Architect Who Became the King of Bank Robberies.
How many of us have heard of George Leonidas Leslie, the man single-handedly responsible for four out of five bank robberies in the United States in the late 19th century? And that he managed to pull off this astonishing money grab worth millions while living a bizarre double life? This is a story just begging to be turned into a film or limited streaming series. But first, a compelling read from The Hustle.
4. Fire Sale: Get Some Free Speech While You Can.
It's a tough time for the First Amendment. On the far-right, there’s been calls to ban books. On the far-left, it's the constant drumbeat of ridding from our midsts those who don't hold the proper opinions they choose. This excellent piece from The Atlantic furthers the argument by writing what should be obvious but somehow needs to be said aloud – freedom of expression is all we have. If you restrict it, if you see it as a tool of the oppressors or an unnecessary provocation from the oppressed, you have no freedom of thought yourself and before long, all of us will be living in a land not of the free, but of the censored.
5. The Best Movies Never Made.
This is always one of the more fun conversations to have with family or friends – what if so and so were cast in X movie? One of my favorite podcasts is “The Rewatchables” from The Ringer because the hosts go down just those rabbit holes. Variety puts together a list of films that either had scripts complete or were just ideas floated around by agents and filmmakers. But what if “Kill Bill, Vol. 3?” What about a James Dean biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio? Or a film on Napoleon directed by Stanley Kubrick? At one point they were all ideas that never crossed the finish line.
6. Magpies Are Swooping. People Run For Their Lives.
We’re only two months into the four-month magpie “swooping season” but already more than 600 Australians have been attacked and almost 70 have been injured. There’s a website, Magpiealert.com, that runs off user-generated data and helps track aggressive birds in Australia. What causes the Magpies to attack humans? The birds build and defend their nests as they raise their chicks and see humans as a threat. “Vicious,” said one innocent bystander who got swooped by a pissy Magpie. The linked video is funny but also a bit alarming. Don’t F with the Mags. Who knew?
Thanks for reading everybody and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
