How is everyone’s weekend going? Happy Easter!
Are you a Peep or a Cadbury Creme person? Jellybeans or Chocolate Bunny? All of the above?
We’re going to get to that question.
Today’s Six features articles on the vaccine and how it will wipe out the virus, the curious case of the acrobatic book thieves, sneakers and preachers, the Chicago teenager whom has become a hero to senior citizens and the eternal Easter sweet debate.
Let’s proceed with the Six.
Don’t Believe the Doomsayers. The Vaccine Will End the Pandemic.
There was another round of what I call fear porn hitting the airwaves and social media this week. Cable new trotting out ‘experts’ saying how scared they were the latest virus variants in Europe or even cases in the United States. Ignore them. This Bloomberg piece examines a new CDC study that shows vaccines sharply cut infections, not just hospitalizations. So much with Covid of course is what we want to believe. I believe in the fact-based arguments in this article.
Preachers and Their $5,000 Sneakers.
I get how sneakers are the new dress shoe. Who needs Allen Edmonds when there’s more comfortable Yeezy slides to slip on? But this is a wild story from the Washington Post about a member of a Dallas church who noticed his preacher rocking a pair of $800 Yeezy kicks and starting taking photos…and posting them on Instagram. Entertaining read.
Cracking the Case of the Acrobatic Rare Book Thieves.
Another deep dive from Vanity Fair (they’ve done a few of these lately) on the odd yet fascinating case of book thieves in Europe. These Mission Impossible-style robbers somehow managed to steal extremely rare and well-guarded books by Isaac Newton and Dante and a book considered the originator of astronomy. They eluded investigators from the famous Scotland Yard and other countries until they nabbed the burglars. I would not be surprised if the film rights have not already been sold.
The Chicago Teenager Who Became A Vaccine Hero.
A Chicago high school freshman saw his grandparents struggle to deal with public health red tape during Covid. So he started the “Chicago Vaccine Angels” which books vaccine appointments for senior citizens. An an old fashioned People magazine feel good story.
College Athletes Will Get Paid Soon. Two Chicago-Based Entrepreneurs Come Up With An Idea.
Sea changes are happening in 2021 to the long standing definition of amateurism and college athletics. Athletes will start to make legitimate money. The market is ripe for business opportunities and the Chicago Tribune features two Chicago-based entrepreneurs who have started a company. They sell game-worn jerseys, shoes and other items, with a portion of sales going back to the players. They have already drawn interest from venture capitalists.
It’s the Godzilla Vs. Kong of Easter Candy.
So what’s it going to be? I’m partial to any kind of jellybean or chocolate bunny. Throw in a pile of Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs. A fun read on the top Easter candy sellers and the arguments for hoarding each at whatever Easter get together we all attend.
Have a great rest of your weekend and Easter everybody. Thanks for reading as always.
