How is everybody’s weekend going? Big football day in the Midwest with NFL championship games in Green Bay and Kansas City. I’m thinking we’re going to see a rematch of the 1967 Super Bowl (the first) this year.
The Six is here with articles on how trust in mainstream media hits a new low, the passing of arguably the greatest baseball player of all time and a history of yes…peanut butter.
Let’s proceed with The Six.
Trust in Mainstream Media Hits All-Time Low
Trends have been moving in this direction for a long time, how the general public does not trust the intentions of traditional, or mainstream media. This study proves those trends to be correct. One stat from the survey—58% of people believe that “most news organizations are more concerned with supporting an ideology or political position than informing the public.” As someone who subscribes (and has written for in my career) to several MSM outlets, I would lean towards agreeing with that assessment.
Hammerin’ Hank Aaron Dies at 86
While 2020 was filled with deaths and just general badness, another vitally significant person in our nation’s history is gone. Aaron held the home run record for decades, breaking Babe Ruth’s mark in the early 1970’s. But Aaron is arguably just as important a figure in baseball culturally. Another terrific obit from the NY Times (no political position here…just good information on the remarkable life of Aaron).
Health Experts Urge Confidence in Vaccine
Earlier this month, Aaron received a Covid vaccine shot, with much fanfare. A few weeks later, he died peacefully in his sleep. His death so soon after taking the vaccine has raised concerns over its viability or did the vaccine contribute to Aaron’s death? Health care officials say it was just a coincidence and more than likely Aaron just died of natural causes and from other underlying health issues. A good piece from the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Japan Insists Olympics Will Go On As Planned
A new round of hand-wringing over the Olympics went around the internet earlier this week. An article from a UK publication (hmm…see article #1) said the Summer Olympics, already postponed from 2020, would not be held in its rescheduled year of 2021. But Japan refutes the report, saying it is focused on holding the Games this summer. Let’s hope so. I need my fix of canoe slalom and handball this summer.
Most Anticipated Movies of 2021
It’s been so long since I’ve even thought of a new film being released (OK, “Tenet” was the last one) so this list was fun to read. The movies listed here range from sequels to long running franchises like James Bond, and ones that are going straight to streaming. I personally can’t imagine seeing Bond or “Top Gun: Maverick” at home. I’ll wait as long as I have to, but I’m going to the theater for them.
A Brief History of Peanut Butter
Full disclosure—I have a long love affair with peanut butter. Eat it almost every day. I can’t imagine existing in a world without peanut butter. A fascinating history of the delightful nutriment (not a paste or spread to me…an actual food) which first got patented in 1895.
Have a great rest of your weekend everybody. Thanks for reading as always.
