How is everybody’s weekend going? Holiday shopping just about done? Thanks for spending part of your Sunday reading The Six.
The line up today features articles on Elon Musk’s move to Texas and what it says about Illinois, Michigan again reverses course and high school football is back on, a sports psychologist gives advice to parents during Covid and an epic rant from Tom Cruise.
Let’s proceed with the Six.
Michigan Will Finish High School Football After All
One of the interesting aspects of the Year of the Virus is to see how other states deal with Covid vs Illinois. One striking difference—education and political leaders in other states make actual decisions. In Illinois, they do nothing but punt and kick the can down the road. Michigan, after pausing high school football in November, elected to resume its postseason in January. It creates all sorts of unintended consequences but at least those in charge did what’s right for kids. Let them play and finish their seasons.
What Elon Musk Move To Texas Says About Illinois
This is a good editorial from the Tribune outlining why Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and Space X, is moving to Texas from California. Let’s see…California is heavy on regulation and taxes. Texas? Neither a state income or capital gains tax. The editorial localizes the move and what Illinois can learn from Musk’s flight from Cali.
The Concert Industry Is Asking For Federal Aid
Anyone in a business that requires large gatherings to make money has been decimated by Covid. The live music industry, virtually non-existent since mid-March, is asking for a federal bailout. A piece of legislation, the Save Our Stages Act is now before Congress waiting on a vote. Live music will eventually come back (late summer, early fall are best case projections) but will there be any places for musicians to play?
Sports Psychologist Offers Poignant Advice For Parents During Covid
There’s been a lot written and discussed about the physical and mental well being of athletes in 2020. How young athletes handle a year of instability has much to do with the climate at home. This article breaks down an interview with a California-based sports psychologist who says parents can often be the ones who struggle most when kids are sidelined. Thanks to subscriber Ben Berg for passing this story along.
A Rant For the Ages By Tom Cruise
When I first heard this, it sounded like a clip from a Tom Cruise movie (“A Few Good Men,” maybe?) The fact it’s actually real makes the audio that much more compelling (it sounds just like Tom Cruise in character, but it’s the real Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise). The clip makes me like Cruise even more, him admonishing crew members for not following Covid protocols (how hard is it to wear a frickin’ mask, people?) For anyone who’s ever been in charge and responsible for other people’s conduct, you will understand.
Large Python Bursts Through Ceiling, Surprises Man in Bathroom
If I’m ever in Thailand, I’m never using the bathroom. Just read.
Have a great rest of your weekend everybody. We’ll be back with a new Six in 2021. Have a wonderful holiday.
