How is everyone’s weekend going?
The snow is melting, the sun is shining and thoughts creep towards spring.
And that means March Madness, baseball, and for the first time in the state of Illinois, where I live, football.
Today’s list of articles on the Six includes the return of baseball, the Beach Boys cash out, the release from prison of the country’s oldest parolee and the future of golf without Tiger Woods (again).
Let’s proceed with the Six.
Tiger Woods Long Road To Recovery
Strange news out of Los Angeles this week when we learned Tiger Woods had been involved in a single car accident. When I heard the news I felt the same as so many others, ‘oh no, not Kobe Bryant all over again.’ Fortunately, Woods survived the crash but questions remain about his future and that of the golf’s.
He’s Looking Forward To A Better Everything
This is just such an unbelievable story that I almost still can’t believe. Joe Ligon was sent away to prison at the age of 15. Earlier this month, the 83-year-old Ligon was finally released and is a free man. Our nation’s longest-serving juvenile ‘lifer’ had been in jail since 1953. Now he’s a free man. A terrific read from the Washington Post (h/t to my sister, Heather, for forwarding the article).
Baseball Spring Training Games Are Back
Pitchers! Catchers! And today, Sunday Feb. 28, we have games. Yes, from Port St. Lucie, Florida all the way west to Surprise, Arizona, spring training baseball officially begins. ESPN has a ‘roundtable’ article with its baseball writers on what to expect and look forward to this spring from the sport of baseball.
I’m not big comic book guy and although I’ve seen some of the Marvel films, I don’t consume them rabidly. This article is not a ‘fan boy’ comic piece. But it’s an interesting read from Slate on how in the 1960’s, a magazine article destroyed the relationship between Stan Lee, the famous founder of Marvel, and one of his partners. Some of the anecdotes published in the article over 50 years ago are fun to read as they would never fly past an editor today. This article from Slate is an excerpt of a upcoming biography of Lee.
How To Beat Covid? Gin-Soaked Raisins
Last week it was Texas, this week it’s the elderly (unintentional weekly themes of the Six). An excellent feature via the New York Times on a 105-year-old woman who got Covid, survived, and told the world how she slayed the virus. Who knew the secret is daily intake of gin-soaked raisins?
The Beach Boys Are Cashing Out
This is a trend amongst well-known music artists…selling off publishing rights. Bob Dylan did it in a nine-figure deal. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac made millions in selling off their catalogs. Now it’s the Beach Boys who as they approach their 60th anniversary as a group (yes, 60!) have decided to finally cash out. No dollar figure was given but safe to say the ‘Good Vibrations’ will continue for the original boys of summer for a long, long time.
Have a great rest of your weekend everybody. Thanks for reading as always.
