How is everybody’s weekend going? Thanks again for spending part of your Sunday reading the Six.
The line up today features articles on true crime, a college student bit by a bear, five years after a campus protest rocked a university and ranking all 24 James Bond films.
Let’s proceed with the Six:
Five Years After the Missouri Football Protests
We live in a time when campus rallies or protests are a common response to real or perceived oppression. That wasn’t the case in 2015. That fall, in Columbia, MO on the campus of the University of Missouri, football players stood with the student body in protesting racial injustices. It led the the resignation of the school president. Where do things stand today? A terrific investigative story from Sports Illustrated.
A Bear Bit Her And She Didn’t Know It
Whenever I read these types of stories, I’m reminded of why I never go camping in the woods. There’s always the slight chance a hungry bear could sneak up and well…read this first person essay. It’s about a college student from Colorado who literally lived through a nightmare—a bear attack.
The Strange Death of the Nameless Hiker
Keeping with the outdoors theme, this is really good narrative read from Wired. It’s about a man who started a hiking trip just north of New York City, worked his way south to Northern Florida then…was found dead. A nine month, phone-less and credit card-less hiking odyssey for a man known as Mostly Harmless. No one knew his real name as that’s what he called himself. Trying to figure out his true identity left investigators baffled.
People Who Made Promises if Biden Wins Presidency
This a fun piece put together by BuzzFeed News. It’s a collection of tweets from people who played the ‘If Biden wins…’ game online. Nothing as dopey as the ‘Never Trumpers’ who claimed they’d leave the country if Trump won back in 2016. Just a quick, breezy read.
‘Morally Indefensible’ Podcast Looks at Famous Jeffrey MacDonald Case
As I’ve written about before in this space, I will binge on true crime podcasts once every few months. This is the latest I downloaded and am listening to—a revisionist look at the famous Jeffrey MacDonald murders from 1970. The case of a Marine doctor accused (and convicted) of murdering his family spawned a book called “Fatal Vision.” This podcast looks at the relationship between MacDonald and the author of the book, Joe McGuinness. Compelling production using old audio clips and recreation of events. Worth a download and listen.
Ranking all 24 James Bond Movies
I dig these pop culture ranking stories (as Six readers know) especially if it’s about something I’ve seen or read. Having watched all 24 James Bond movies, this is right up my ally (and for most of you reading this I’m sure as Bond films date back to 1962). Pretty honest evaluation of Bond flicks (strong nod to Sean Connery as best Bond) although I’d rank “Man With The Golden Gun” a bit higher (a campy but fun Roger Moore Bond film) and drop “Goldeneye” lower (no way any Pierce Brosnan Bond is better than anything Connery did). A Bond binge will probably happen some weekend this winter.
Have a great rest of your weekend everybody. Thanks for reading as always.
