How is everybody’s weekend going? Thanks again for spending part of your Sunday reading the Six.
The line up today features articles on the Covid vaccine, an entrepreneurial journalist who leveraged her hyperlocal election coverage as a fundraising tool, a tribute to the late Alex Trebek and why everyone (except me apparently) is watching “The Queen’s Gambit” on Netflix.
Let’s proceed with the Six:
The Vulnerable and Elderly Can Wait. Let’s Vaccinate The Social Butterflys First
An interesting piece from Wired arguing that when the Covid vaccine is ready for distribution, doses should first be given out to the super-spreaders. You know, the folks who like to go out and spend time around other people.
My Daughter Was A Creative Genius. Then We Bought Her An iPhone
A really good personal essay on Medium from a couple confirming many parents worse fears about when to buy one of their children a phone. This couple talks about their daughter who used to make clothes and elaborate drawings in a notebook. But when the young girl got an iPhone, the device, and all of its apps, became her muse. A funny and heartwarming essay.
This Reporter Lost Her Job But Kept Reporting The News
The circumstance of the character in this story—a reporter who lost her job—is not an unusual one in 2020. But what Robin Kemp, who lives in Clayton County, Georgia, did about it is worthy of its own story. The Washington Post takes a look at Kemp, whom on election night pulled an all-nighter and went from laid off newspaper reporter with a barely read website to prominent editor of a well-known and credible publication.
Alex Trebek Was More Like Family Than A Game Show Host
The long time host of the game show,‘Jeopardy’, Alex Trebek, died recently at the age of 80. Admittedly, I was never a ‘Jeopardy’ viewer except when it happened to be on in the background (which was a lot in the 80’s and 90’s). But the show has a massive following and it being a daily program, Trebek became a cult figure for many. This is a good piece from The Ringer on why Trebek was so popular and revered.
NYPD Strained Relationship With New Yorkers
There are 34,000 police officers in New York. How do New Yorkers view the city’s finest in 2020? A deeply reported piece on the New York City Police Department from its response to protests against police violence to public safety concerns amid the pandemic.
The Reason Why Everyone Is Watching The Queen’s Gambit
This show on Netflix, “The Queen’s Gambit” is now the most recommended streaming show on the outlet. How did it become the late year’s “Tiger King?” It has a compelling story tagline—an orphaned heroine wants to become a world chess champion. What? Who thought of that? It’s catching on in the culture with media reviews such as this one from BuzzFeed.
Have a great rest of your weekend everybody. Thanks for reading as always.
