How is everybody’s weekend going? Thanks again for spending part of your Sunday reading the Six. Hope everyone had a great Halloween.
No virus-related articles in today’s Six. I think it’s OK to take a break for this week.
The line up today features articles on Americans lined up to vote, a famous person in pop culture gets his works ranked and life in the Tik-Tok clubhouse.
Let’s proceed with the Six:
Early voting is a massive story during this election cycle. Millions of votes have already been cast ahead of this Tuesday’s official Election Day, Nov. 3. This article takes readers inside voting lines in six US cities. A beautifully designed multi-media piece of storytelling that is inspiring, disturbing and informative.
The Official Aaron Sorkin Rankings
I can be a sucker for these pop culture ranking pieces. “The Ringer” does a lot of them, its latest on film and television writer Aaron Sorkin. The author of “The West Wing” and “A Few Good Men” has a new Netflix film out titled, “The Trial of the Chicago Seven” which I do want to watch. I’d agree with these rankings ('“Moneyball,” “The Social Network” are terrific films) except for the No. 5 ranking of the film “The American President.” Didn’t get it. A silly movie.
Hyper-Partisanship Pay-To-Play Fill Local News Hole
Good read via the NY Times on online publications that serve as propaganda newsletters for politicians and parties. The sites look like mainstream news outlets, even have names that sound like conventional newspapers—Des Moines Sun, Ann Arbor Times—but under the masthead are stories managed by political groups and PR firms with the intent to defame rivals. Interesting stuff.
Chicago White Sox Hire Tony LaRussa. Yes, that Tony LaRussa
In 1979, the Chicago White Sox of Major League Baseball hired an unknown 35-year-old to manage its team. A few days ago, the same White Sox team re-hired the same manager. Only in 2020, Tony LaRussa is 76 years old. A shot in the arm to the Silent Generation or a debacle in the making?
Life In The Clubhouse Making Tik-Tok Videos
I’m fascinated by Tik-Tok mostly because I would embrace the technology if I were a Gen Z’er. But I’m not (Gen X), forced to be an interested bystander. The reporter of this story spent time with Tik-Tok influencers who all live together in an L.A. mansion (called ‘content houses) and…make Tik-Tok videos. Sounds like a watchable season of “The Real World” (Gen X reference).
Minnesota Senior Lives Dream to Play In Football Game
There are untended consequences to denying young people the right to well, be young. While Illinois government leaders continue to argue and bicker, Minnesota is playing sports. A young man lives out his dream while he still can. Bravo to the coaches (and forward-thinking leaders in MN) for making this happen. Super cool piece of video.
