Each Sunday, I will send along a list of links. These are the most six most interesting articles I read this week and why.
Michigan reverses course, decides to play fall high school sports after all
If we’ve learned anything about the last six months as it relates to the virus…nothing is permanent. Decisions made in August do not need to be held in September. A week after saying she was ‘glad’ there would be no football in the state of Michigan this fall, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer apparently changed her mind. High school football will be played in the state in two weeks. Why can’t Illinois do this? That’s a good question and one I’m going to be examining in the newsletter very soon.
Big Ten To Now Play Football in October? Would Take A ‘Miracle’
Like sands through the hourglass, so are Days of Our Big Ten. The latest drama this week was a rumor Big Ten presidents were going to vote again on whether to resume play in October. One Big Ten athletic director debunks that rumor saying it would take a ‘miracle’ to start the 2020 season next month. But there appears to be continued movement towards a Thanksgiving kickoff. Or not. Whatever, the Big Ten acted way to soon in cancelling the fall season, they now know it, and is now attempting to seize back diminished public relations.
Tom Seaver Dies at 75, First Star of the New York Mets
The New York Times is still the best newspaper for obits of famous people. I always learn something and have one of those ‘no shit!’ moments when I read it. I had no idea a newspaper columnist for the New York Post helped engineer Tom Seaver’s exit from New York to Cincinnati back in 1977, or that Seaver was one of the first baseball players to speak out against the Vietnam War. Good read on the passing of a legend.
‘Tenet’ Is Finally in Theaters. Will It Be A Hit?
There’s been a lot of think pieces lately about the future of movie theaters. Will they survive the virus? A hit movie could change the outlook and ‘Tenet’ is considered a potential white knight. The Christopher Nolan film opens wide this weekend, the first major film to do so since March.
Snake Removed From Women’s Stomach. Yes, Her Stomach
This is another reminder why I am not a sleep-under-the-stars guy. Hotels are much more comfortable and reptiles don’t like air conditioning.
I’ve always associated Labor Day with football—college football typically kicks off and the NFL is one week away. Fantasy draft! I know there’s an actual reason we have the holiday other than that. This article does a nice job summarizing the holiday’s meaning and place in our country’s history.
