How is everybody’s weekend going? I’m deep in football divisional playoffs…best NFL weekend of the year.
The Six is here with articles on vaccine tourism, big tech becoming too bloated, the live music scene in 2021 and a bobcat (yes, a bobcat) attacks a couple in Connecticut.
Let’s proceed with the Six.
The first month of 2021 has not brought an relief from the chaos of 2020. If anything, there’s been more disruption. The events at the Capitol from the previous week have resulted in an impeachment of the President and a ban from social media accounts. It raises questions about the ultimate power of big tech companies and its impact on a most-democratic concept—the marketplace of ideas. Good read from Outkick.
A photo summary and timeline of events at the US Capitol from a few weeks ago via The Washington Post. The images are striking and disturbing.
People Are Flying to Florida for Vaccine Shots
As soon as the Covid vaccine rolled out, a black market was created. In Florida, the state has legitimized the underground by allowing for anyone over the age of 65 to get dosed. Proof of residency not required. All those Canadian snowbirds planning to wait out the winter are now booking trips to the Sunshine State.
Will We Have Live Music in 2021?
I’m someone who attends at least a half dozen concerts each year (used to be a lot more when I lived in the city). Not having that outlet of live music was a gaping entertainment hole in 2020. Will concerts return this year? Rolling Stone examines the issue in great detail and comes to the conclusion of…yes, kind of, maybe, but not completely.
NCAA Council Tables Name, Image and Likeness Legislation
One of the major developments of 2021 is the end of collegiate amateurism as we’ve known it for most of our lives. States are passing legislation that approves college athletes making money the Olympic development model way—off their name, image and likeness. The NCAA has been behind on this issue and is trying to catch up. But they may be too late.
Wild Bobcat Attacks Connecticut Couple
Readers of the Six know I like to send out wacky, animal stories. This qualifies—a Connecticut couple went out to walk the dog and then…well, read the story. They are OK and the man involved, he deserves mad props for diffusing the situation.
Have a great rest of your weekend everybody. Thanks for reading as always.
