How is everyone’s weekend going? Getting in one last late summer mini-vacation?
In honor of the Labor Day holiday, I’m giving readers of the Six a break from Covid. No stories today on the virus or the politics surrounding it. I’ll continue to cover it and write about it on TKR (it ain’t going anywhere folks) but this weekend, enjoy the Six Covid-free.
Today’s Six includes articles on how a mistress of JFK comes clean after decades of silence; what college graduate degrees earn the most in starting salary; the controversy involving McDonald’s ice cream machines and an alligator literally goes up in smoke.
Let’s proceed with the Six.
J.F.K. And The Radcliffe Girl.
When I saw “JFK” and “mistress” trending earlier in the week, I thought it was a social media-driven spoof. Come on…what do we not know about the famous former president, almost 60 years after his death? Apparently there is more to learn. This memoir-style article from Air Mail is actually a very compelling read and with no happy ending. Incredible how this woman, now 83 years old, has never spoken publicly about her affair with Kennedy. It’s out now and making news across the globe.
The Best Places To Live May Not Be After All.
Data from the 2020 Census is now available. What it reveals about where people are moving to (Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas) and from (St. Louis, Detroit, Chicago) is not all that surprising. But this article from Bloomberg dives deeper into the data. It argues that population growth is not always correlated with the health of a city. When click-bait headlines say certain cities are the best places to live, they are often not.
What’s The Deal with McDonald’s McFlurry Machines?
We’ve all probably at one point seen the memes on social media — of the exploding ice cream machines at McDonald’s. I went inside a McDonald’s this summer while on the road and the worker behind the counter told me the machine wasn’t working (I got a milkshake instead). The constant breakdowns of the ice cream machines has become such a problem that the Federal Trade Commission is looking into it. The Boston Globe explains more about this part- ridiculous part-serious story.
The 10 Majors That Earn The Highest Starting Salaries.
Yes, massive unemployment and earnings cuts were an off-shoot of the pandemic for working class Americans. But college grads? They are making more money than ever. CNBC with a data-driven story on what majors are drawing the largest salaries (math/science) and what those numbers are.
How A High School Football Team Duped ESPN.
One of the weirdest stories of the week that got massive mainstream media coverage. Anything that involves ESPN is going to draw attention, especially if it makes the former worldwide leader look bad. This event checks all the boxes — a little known private high school team out or Columbus, Ohio somehow convinced ESPN it was legitimate enough to broadcast one of its games. Turns out the school sold ESPN the television equivalent of swampland in Florida. The Washington Post picks up the story from there.
Alligator Disappears in Smoke Show.
Coolest video of the week. A Florida alligator (of course Florida!) snatches a drone out of the air. While the drone is in its jaws, smoke starts billowing out from the water. Wait a few seconds for the smoke to appear…wild stuff. Florida is part of the United States but man, unnatural events happen in the Sunshine State on a regular basis.
Have a great rest of your holiday weekend everybody. Thanks for reading as always.
