How is everybody’s weekend going?
I’m just about sick of the snow at this point. The cold doesn’t bother me as much as the snow and so far, 2021 has more than doubled that of a normal year. The good news…pitchers and catchers report to Arizona and Florida later this week. Baseball’s return is always a hopeful sign spring (and summer) is just around the corner.
Today’s list of articles includes a piece on Jeff Bezos of Amazon, a rare interview with the actor Michelle Pfeiffer, Tom Brady celebrates his latest Super Bowl win and a protective Texas mom brings down (literally) a peeping tom.
Let’s proceed with the Six.
I’m sure many of you reading saw the news last week that Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, was stepping down as CEO of the multi-billion dollar company. Bezos is not going anywhere, he’s just removing himself from day-to-day operations. This is really good read from Ben Thompson, who publishes the tech-focused newsletter, Stratchery, on Bezos and why Amazon is Amazon. Thompson embeds a 1998 speech Bezos gave at Lake Forest College where he explains why he started the company selling books (it grew from there as we all know by now).
Michelle Pfeiffer Chooses Carefully.
We don’t get much work from Michelle Pfeiffer (at least the last 20 years or so) and she rarely gives interviews. But the New Yorker manages to track her down and Pfeiffer agrees to a Q&A-style conversation. One of the best actors of the 80’s and 90’s, Pfeiffer is content living a private life married to one of the most prolific television writers of our time, David E. Kelley. One reason why she stays married? She doesn’t work with her husband (turns out that’s a smart move).
Tom Brady Drinks Avocado Tequila In The Sun
So Tom Brady won his 7th Super Bowl last Sunday. What did he do to celebrate? He got together with a bunch of his teammates, rented some house boats (or a yacht in the case of Brady) and he had too much to drink. That’s what’s so great about this story and video (watch Brady toss the Lombardi trophy across the water) is how human this makes Brady look. Who wouldn’t want to day drink in the Florida after winning a championship?
Man Reunites With Wallet Lost Over 50 Years Ago
This is might be my favorite feature article of the week. A terrific story of the retrieval of a wallet that belonged to a San Diego man who, in 1967-68, spent 13 months in Antarctica working as a weather forecaster for a science station while in the Navy. When he left to return to the U.S., Paul Grisham left his wallet behind. Grisham, now 91 years old, thought it was gone forever until…the lost wallet was returned to him 53 years later.
Outside magazine does a really good job with survival-in-the-wild type stories. This is one about surviving a crash, the crash being a helicopter accident. Erin Tierney, a heli-ski guide and instructor in Canada, pens this personal essay about her accident ten years ago and it’s lingering mental toll.
I try not to include overly viral stories on the Six, but couldn’t resist this one. It’s just too good, the video and the quotes on the story. Mother of the Year nominee, Phyllis Pena of Lake Jackson, Texas. You go Phyllis! What a take down.
Have a great rest of your weekend everybody. Thanks for reading as always.
