First off, thanks to all of you again for your support of the first month of the newsletter.
If you missed out on any of this week’s articles, just go to the main newsletter page. They are all there.
Each Sunday, I will send along a list of links. These are the most six most interesting articles I read this week and why.
Here is the Sunday Six.
Pennsylvania Votes To Allow Fall Sports
One outcome from the virus & sports is learning how different states legislate. Illinois determined it was unsafe to play fall high school sports. Pennsylvania’s youth sports association voted it was safe to play, defying its governor’s wishes. Bravo to that association for leading through an contentious political climate and ultimately coming to a rational decision—let them play.
An unfortunate casualty to the turmoil in college sports. No football, no revenue.
I’m as fascinated by Tik-Tok as anyone can be who doesn’t actually Tik-Tok. The social media app is huge amongst the teenage market (at least for girls) but what is its true market value? Tik-Tok is more in MSM news recently as Trump said the US should get a bite of any sale. The app is definitely having a moment.
Why Sportswriters Are Turning to Newsletters
I’m not the only sportswriter impacted by the current climate in media. There are men and women all over the country that are leaving well-known publications and starting their own thing. Can the economics work? To be determined.
Who Was Jessie’s Girl? We’ll Never Know
Last summer at Ravinia, I finally heard the song “Jessie’s Girl” live. It was surreal, to hear in person a song I’ve listened to a thousand times on the radio (like everyone else over the age of 40) or from cover bands. Rick Springfield, who wrote and sang ‘Jessie’s Girl’, said he doesn’t remember the true inspiration of the song. Or kind of does. Maybe not. A cool story that traces the song’s history.
Everyone’s favorite nun turned 101 Friday. Yes 101. This tweet shows an awesome video tribute to Sr. Jean, whom is still connected to Loyola and its athletes.
